Sonographer Job Description

Baxley GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Baxley GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Baxley GA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Baxley GA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Baxley GA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Baxley GA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Baxley home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Baxley GA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Baxley GA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Baxley GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Baxley GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Baxley healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Baxley GA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Baxley GA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
