Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Barnesville GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Barnesville GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Barnesville GA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Barnesville GA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

Barnesville GA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Barnesville GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Barnesville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Barnesville GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Barnesville GA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Barnesville GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Barnesville GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Barnesville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Barnesville GA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Barnesville GA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
