Sonogram Tech Job Description

Winslow AZ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Winslow AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Winslow AZ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Winslow AZ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arizona or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Winslow AZ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Winslow AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Winslow home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Winslow AZ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Winslow AZ area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Winslow AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Winslow AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Winslow medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Winslow AZ home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Winslow AZ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Winslow, Arizona

Winslow (Navajo: Béésh Sinil) is a city in Navajo County, Arizona, in the United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 9,655.[2] It is located approximately 75 miles (121 km) SE of Flagstaff, 320 miles (510 km) W of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and 329 miles (529 km) SE of Las Vegas.

Winslow was named for either Edward F. Winslow, president of St. Louis and San Francisco Rail Road, which owned one half of the old Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, or Tom Winslow, a prospector who lived in the area.[4]

The last Harvey House (La Posada Hotel) opened in 1930. It was designed by Mary Colter. The hotel closed in 1957 and was used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. The railroad abandoned La Posada in 1994 and announced plans to tear it down. It was bought and restored by Allan Affeldt[5] and it currently serves as a hotel.[6]
