Sonographer Work Summary

Star City AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Star City AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Star City AR ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Star City AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

Star City AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Star City AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Star City home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Star City AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Star City AR area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Star City AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Star City AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Star City healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Star City AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Star City AR area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
