Sonographer Work Description

South Gate CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in South Gate CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

South Gate CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through South Gate CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

South Gate CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local South Gate CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your South Gate home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many South Gate CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with South Gate CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their South Gate CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Gate CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    South Gate, California

South Gate is the 17th largest city in Los Angeles County, California, with 7.4 square miles (19 km2). South Gate is located 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Downtown Los Angeles.[9] It is part of the Gateway Cities region of southeastern Los Angeles County.

While Francisco Lugo was stationed at Mission San Antonio de Padua near Salinas, California, his first California son, Antonio Maria Lugo was born in 1775.[14] That son became Don Antonio Maria Lugo, Spanish aristocrat and soldier, who settled on 30,000 acres (120 km2) of land that encompasses what is now the City of South Gate. In 1810, the King of Spain formally granted the land to Lugo as a reward for his and his father's military service.[14] Rancho San Antonio extended from the low range of hills which separated it from the San Gabriel Valley to the old Dominguez Ranch at its south, and from the eastern boundary of the pueblo of Los Angeles to the San Gabriel River. Lugo also served as mayor of Los Angeles from 1816 to 1819.[15]

A little over a century after the establishment of the Lugo Land Grant, the area at the south gate of the ranch became the City of South Gate. As Don Lugo's family grew, he obtained San Bernardino Rancho and other grants in his children's names.
