Sonographer Occupation Summary

North Branford CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in North Branford CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

North Branford CT ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with North Branford CT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

North Branford CT student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local North Branford CT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your North Branford home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask North Branford CT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the North Branford CT area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many North Branford CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with North Branford CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the North Branford health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their North Branford CT residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the North Branford CT area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
