Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Leonidas MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Leonidas MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Leonidas MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Leonidas MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

Leonidas MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Leonidas MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Leonidas home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Leonidas MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Leonidas MI area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Leonidas MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Leonidas MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Leonidas healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Leonidas MI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Leonidas MI area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
