Sonographer Job Summary

Imboden AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Imboden AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Imboden AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Imboden AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

Imboden AR student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Imboden AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Imboden home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Imboden AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Imboden AR area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Imboden AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Imboden AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Imboden health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Imboden AR home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Imboden AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
