Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Harrison AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Harrison AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Harrison AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Harrison AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

Harrison AR student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Harrison AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Harrison home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Harrison AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Harrison AR area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Harrison AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Harrison AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Harrison health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Harrison AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Harrison AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Harrison, Arkansas

Harrison is a city in Boone County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Boone County. It is named after General Marcus LaRue Harrison, a surveyor that laid out the city along Crooked Creek at Stifler Springs.[4] According to 2017 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city was 13,079,[5] up from 12,943 at the 2010 census and it is the 30th largest city in Arkansas based on official 2017 estimates from the US Census Bureau.[6] Harrison is the principal city of the Harrison Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Boone and Newton counties.

Race riots by whites in 1905 and 1909 drove away black residents, establishing Harrison as a sundown town.[7][8] Today (2019) it is known as a center of white supremacist activity, including the national headquarters of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.[9][10] While in the 2010 census the population of Arkansas was 15.7% African-American,[11] in Harrison it was 0.9% and in Boone County 0.5%.[12]

Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the area, the first probably being cliff dwellers who lived in caves in the bluffs along the rivers. In later times, the Osage, a branch of the Sioux, was the main tribe in the Ozarks, and one of their larger villages is thought to have been to the east of the present site of Harrison. The Shawnee, Quapaw, and Caddo people were also familiar to the area.
