Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Escondido CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Escondido CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Escondido CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Escondido CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

Escondido CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Escondido CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Escondido home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Escondido CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Escondido CA area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Escondido CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Escondido CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Escondido health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Escondido CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Escondido CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Escondido, California

Escondido (/ˌɛskənˈdiːdoʊ/ ES-kən-DEE-doh) is a city located in San Diego County's North County region, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of downtown San Diego. The city occupies a shallow valley ringed by rocky hills. Incorporated in 1888, it is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. The city had a population of 143,911 in the 2010 census.

The Escondido area was first settled by the Luiseño, who established campsites and villages along the creek running through the area. They named the place "Mehel-om-pom-pavo." The Kumeyaay migrated from areas near the Colorado River, settling both in the San Pasqual Valley and near the San Dieguito River in the southwestern and western portions of what is now Escondido. Most of the villages and campsites today have been destroyed by development and agriculture.[10]

Spain controlled the land from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, and established many missions in California to convert the indigenous people. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the local land was divided into large ranchos. Most of what is now Escondido occupies the former Rancho Rincon del Diablo ("Devil's Corner"), a Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado (not the governor of the same name) in 1843 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Alvarado was a Regidor of Los Angeles at the time, and the first Regidor of the pueblo of San Diego. The southern part of Escondido occupies the former Rancho San Bernardo, granted in 1842 and 1845.[11]
