Sonographer Occupation Description

Danville AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Danville AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Danville AR ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Danville AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

Danville AR student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Danville AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Danville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Danville AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Danville AR area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Danville AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Danville AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Danville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Danville AR residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Danville AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
