Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Clewiston FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Clewiston FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Clewiston FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Clewiston FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Clewiston FL student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Clewiston FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Clewiston home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Clewiston FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Clewiston FL area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Clewiston FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Clewiston FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Clewiston medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Clewiston FL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Clewiston FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Clewiston, Florida

Clewiston is a city in Hendry County, Florida, United States. Its location is on the Atlantic coastal plain. The population was 7,155 at the 2010 census,[5] up from 6,460 at the 2000 census. The estimated population in 2015 was 7,505.[6] The city is located on the south bank of Lake Okeechobee, and the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail passes through the edge of the city. The city is home to the Clewiston Museum and the Dixie Crystal Theatre. The area has been home to Seminole tribe members and sugar plantations. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum is located 32 miles south of the city.

The area beside Lake Okeechobee was once used as a fishing camp by the Seminole tribe. The first permanent settlement began in 1920, when John O'Brien of Philadelphia and Alonzo Clewis of Tampa purchased a large tract of land to establish a town. They commissioned a town plan and built the Moore Haven & Clewiston Railroad to connect the community to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad at Moore Haven. Incorporated as a city in 1925, Clewiston would become noted for its sport fishing, particularly of largemouth bass.

Large sugar plantations were established around Lake Okeechobee. By the 1950s and 1960s, the cultivation of citrus, vegetables and cattle were also important to the economy. The US Sugar Corporation, however, remained the dominant manufacturer in Clewiston, which became known as "America's Sweetest Town". On June 24, 2008, Governor Charlie Crist announced that the state of Florida had arranged to buy for $1.75 billion the company's 187,000 acres (76,000 ha), including the refinery in Clewiston. On November 11, the plan was scaled back to $1.34 billion for 181,000 acres (73,000 ha) of farmland, no longer including the mill, citrus processing facilities and other assets. This would allow the company to remain in business and leave open the possibility of preserving its 1,700 jobs. Over the next seven crop cycles, the farmland would be leased back from the state to US Sugar for $60 million. It would then be converted into reservoirs and water-filtering areas as part of the ongoing restoration of the Everglades ecosystem.
