Sonographer Occupation Description

Bonifay FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bonifay FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bonifay FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Bonifay FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Bonifay FL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bonifay FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bonifay home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Bonifay FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bonifay FL area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bonifay FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Bonifay FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bonifay health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Bonifay FL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bonifay FL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Bonifay is a city in Holmes County, Florida, United States. Bonifay was given its name from a prominent family that had a brickmaking factory in Pensacola. Frank Bonifay, the man behind the town's name, bought a stake in the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, now CSX. As W. D. Chipley connected the rural Florida Panhandle, along the way he came up with names for certain communities the railroad bisected.[5]

SR 79 (Waukesha Street) connects I-10 and US-90 and passes through the center of Bonifay, leading north 13 miles (21 km) to Esto and south 12 miles (19 km) to Vernon.

A 2004 study by the Bureau of Secondary Education showed that 56.73% of Holmes County high school graduates go on to secondary education.
