Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ballentine SC area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ballentine SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Ballentine SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Ballentine health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Ballentine SC home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ballentine SC area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
