Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Auberry CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Auberry CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Auberry CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Auberry CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

Auberry CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Auberry CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Auberry home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Auberry CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Auberry CA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Auberry CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Auberry CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Auberry healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Auberry CA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Auberry CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
