Springdale AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Springdale AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Springdale AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Springdale AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

Springdale AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Springdale AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Springdale home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Springdale AR ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Springdale AR area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Springdale AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Springdale AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Springdale health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Springdale AR home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Springdale AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
