Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Salem KY ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Salem KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Salem KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

Salem KY student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Salem KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Salem home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to ask Salem KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Salem KY area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Salem KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Salem KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Salem healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Salem KY residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Salem KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
