Salem CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Salem CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Salem CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Salem CT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Salem CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Salem home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Salem CT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Salem CT area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Salem CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Salem CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Salem medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Salem CT home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Salem CT area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Salem, Connecticut

The area was originally inhabited by the Mohegan people. The first settlement of European origin in present-day Salem (then part of the town of Montville) was deeded in 1664. In the early 18th century, more settlements appeared in what was then Colchester. During this time period, the area was called "Paugwonk". The small neighborhood around the Gardner Lake Firehouse on Route 354 is sometimes still referred to by that name.

Because of the remote location of these settlements and the considerable distance to churches, the people petitioned the Connecticut General Court for a new parish in 1725. It was named New Salem Parish, in honor of Colonel Samuel Browne, the largest landowner at the time, who was from Salem, Massachusetts. Recent archaeological evidence suggests that Colonel Browne owned slaves. The people of New Salem strongly supported the Patriot cause in the Revolution. Salem was the first town in the state of Connecticut to have a plantation, owned by the Browne family.

Salem was incorporated as a town in 1819 from lands of Colchester, Lyme, and Montville.[2] The rocky and craggy land that constituted much of the town kept the population low and new settlement at a minimum. Salem has always been a crossroads town; the old Hartford and New London Turnpike (now Route 85) was a toll road, traveled frequently by legislators during the winters of the 19th century when the Connecticut River was impassable. The Turnpike provided stage coach service until the 1890s.
