Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pentwater MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you choose to work in.

But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Pentwater home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Pentwater MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pentwater MI area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Pentwater MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Pentwater MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Pentwater healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Pentwater MI home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pentwater MI area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
