Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Naugatuck CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Naugatuck CT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Naugatuck CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Naugatuck CT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Naugatuck CT student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Naugatuck CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Naugatuck home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Naugatuck CT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Naugatuck CT area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Naugatuck CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Naugatuck CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Naugatuck health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Naugatuck CT home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Naugatuck CT area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Naugatuck, Connecticut

Naugatuck is a consolidated borough and town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The town spans both sides of the Naugatuck River just south of Waterbury, and includes the communities of Union City on the east side of the river, which has its own post office, Straitsville on the southeast (along Route 63), and Millville on the west (along Rubber Avenue). As of the 2010 census, Naugatuck had a population of 31,862.[2]

Naugatuck was settled in 1701 as a farming community in rural western Connecticut. As the Industrial Revolution commenced, Naugatuck was transformed into a hardscrabble mill town like its neighbors in the Naugatuck Valley.

Rubber was the chief manufactured product. Charles Goodyear worked at his brother's rubber company, the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company & Downtown Naugatuck, until the company was consolidated into the United States Rubber Company. The United States Rubber Company (renamed Uniroyal Inc. in 1961) was founded in Naugatuck in 1892 as a consolidation of nine rubber companies, and maintained their corporate headquarters there until the 1980s. Their Footwear Division manufactured Keds sneakers in Naugatuck from 1917 until the 1980s. U.S. Rubber also produced Naugahyde in a Naugatuck factory, but it is no longer produced there.
