Sonographer Job Summary

Louviers CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Louviers CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Louviers CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Louviers CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

Louviers CO student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Louviers CO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Louviers home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Louviers CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Louviers CO area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Louviers CO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Louviers CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Louviers health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Louviers CO home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Louviers CO area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
