How to Select the Right Ultrasound Technician College near Hugo Colorado

Hugo CO ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Hugo CO, it’s time to start the procedure of selecting a school. First, you need to find the right program that will provide the proper training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? Most individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Hugo CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Hugo CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Hugo CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Hugo CO clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

Hugo CO student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hugo CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hugo home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Hugo CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hugo CO area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hugo CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Hugo CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Hugo healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Hugo CO residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hugo CO area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
