Sonographer Occupation Description

Dumont CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Dumont CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Dumont CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Dumont CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

Dumont CO student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Dumont CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Dumont home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Dumont CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dumont CO area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dumont CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Dumont CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Dumont health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Dumont CO residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dumont CO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
