Sonographer Work Description

Davis CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Davis CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Davis CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Davis CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

Davis CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Davis CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Davis home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Davis CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Davis CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Davis CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Davis CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Davis healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Davis CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Davis CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Davis, California

Davis, known prior to 1907 as Davisville,[10] is a city in the U.S. state of California and the most populous city in Yolo County. It had a population of 65,622 in 2010,[11] not including the on-campus population of the University of California, Davis, which was over 9,400 (not including students' families) in 2016.[12] As of 2016, there were 35,186 students enrolled at the university.[13]

Davis grew into a Southern Pacific Railroad depot built in 1868. It was then known as "Davisville", named after Jerome C. Davis, a prominent local farmer. However, the post office at Davisville shortened the town name to "Davis" in 1907. The name stuck, and the city of Davis was incorporated on March 28, 1917.[14]

From its inception as a farming community, Davis has been known for its contributions to agricultural policy along with veterinary care and animal husbandry. Following the passage of the University Farm Bill in 1905 by the California State Legislature, Governor George Pardee selected Davis out of 50 other sites as the future home to the University of California's University Farm, officially opening to students in 1908.[15] The farm, later renamed the Northern Branch of the College of Agriculture in 1922, was upgraded to become the seventh UC general campus, the University of California, Davis, in 1959.
