Sonogram Tech Work Description

Buena Park CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Buena Park CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Buena Park CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

Buena Park CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Buena Park CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Buena Park home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Buena Park CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Buena Park CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Buena Park CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Buena Park CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Buena Park health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Buena Park CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Buena Park CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Buena Park, California

Buena Park (/ˈbweɪnə/) is a city in northwestern Orange County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area about 12 miles (20 km) northwest of downtown Santa Ana, the county seat. As of Census 2010 its population was 80,530. It is the location of several tourist attractions, including Knott's Berry Farm. It is located about 24 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles and is within the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Original Spanish explorers settled on the enormous ranchos by land grants made by the King of Spain. Manuel Nieto of the Portolà expeditions received such a grant in 1783, which was divided by his heirs into five separate ranchos in 1834. One of them, 46,806-acre (189.42 km2) Rancho Los Coyotes, included the current site of the City of Buena Park. The rancho's adobe headquarters lay on what is now Los Coyotes Country Club's golf course.

The area was transferred from Spanish authority to Mexican rule in 1822 and ceded to the United States in 1848 at the end of the Mexican–American War. California was granted statehood in 1850. Americanization further expanded in the area after completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and its connection to Los Angeles in 1875. By then, Abel Stearns had acquired Rancho Los Coyotes in consideration for loans made to Pio and Andrés Pico. In 1885, James A. Whitaker, a wholesale grocer from Chicago, purchased 690 acres (2.8 km2) of this land from Stearns. In 1887, Whitaker founded the City of Buena Park in conjunction with the railway development of what we now know as Orange County.
