Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Atwater CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Atwater CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Atwater CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Atwater CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Atwater CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Atwater CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Atwater home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Atwater CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Atwater CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Atwater CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Atwater CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Atwater health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Atwater CA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Atwater CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
