Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Rector AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Rector AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Rector AR ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Rector AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

Rector AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Rector AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Rector home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Rector AR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Rector AR area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Rector AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Rector AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Rector healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Rector AR home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Rector AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
