Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Elm Springs AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Elm Springs AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Elm Springs AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Elm Springs AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elm Springs AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Elm Springs home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Elm Springs AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Elm Springs AR area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Elm Springs AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Elm Springs AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Elm Springs medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Elm Springs AR residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elm Springs AR area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
