Sonographer Occupation Description

Bradford AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bradford AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Bradford AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

Bradford AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bradford AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bradford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Bradford AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bradford AR area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bradford AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Bradford AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Bradford healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Bradford AR residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bradford AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
