Sonographer Work Description

Colorado City AZ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Colorado City AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Colorado City AZ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Colorado City AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

Colorado City AZ student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Colorado City AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Colorado City home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Colorado City AZ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Colorado City AZ area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Colorado City AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Colorado City AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Colorado City health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Colorado City AZ residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Colorado City AZ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Colorado City, Arizona

Colorado City is a town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States, and is located in a region known as the Arizona Strip. According to the 2010 census, the population of the town was 4,821.[4] At least three Mormon fundamentalist sects are said to have been based there.[6]

Colorado City, formerly known as Short Creek (or the Short Creek Community), was founded in 1913[7] by members of the Council of Friends, a breakaway group from the Salt Lake City-based The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The Council of Friends membership desired a remote location where they could practice plural marriage, which had been publicly abandoned by the LDS Church in 1890. On July 26, 1953, Arizona Governor John Howard Pyle sent troops into the settlement to stop polygamy in what became known as the Short Creek raid. The two-year legal battle that followed became a public relations disaster that damaged Pyle's political career and set a hands-off tone toward the town in Arizona for the next 50 years.[8]

After the death of Joseph W. Musser, the community split into two groups: the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints stayed in Short Creek, while the Apostolic United Brethren relocated to Bluffdale, Utah. The FLDS changed the name of the community to Colorado City (on the Arizona side of the border) and Hildale (on the Utah side) to eliminate any ties to the Short Creek raids.[7]
