Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Wadley AL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Wadley AL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Wadley AL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Wadley AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

Wadley AL student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Wadley AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Wadley home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Wadley AL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wadley AL area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wadley AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Wadley AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Wadley healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Wadley AL home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wadley AL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
