Northport AL ultrasound technician testing patientOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Northport AL, it’s time to begin the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And because a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you research each school so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. Sonographer Work Description

Northport AL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Northport AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Northport AL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Northport AL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

Northport AL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Northport AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Northport home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Northport AL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Northport AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Northport AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Northport AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Northport health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Northport AL residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Northport AL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
